The letters IHS on this sunburst Ignatian medallion are the first three letters of the name "Jesus" in Greek: ΙΗΣ ("Jesus" in Greek: ΙΗΣΟΥΣ or Ιησους).
According to the Catholic Encyclopedia: "St. Ignatius of Loyola adopted the monogram in his seal as general of the Society of Jesus (1541) and thus became the emblem of his institute." An Ignatian symbol.
Text on back: Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam. - This Latin motto (translation: "For the greater glory of God"), oftened shortened to AMDG, was coined by St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).
Jorge Mario Bergoglio, S.J. , former Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina is now the first Jesuit Pope, Pope Francis.
