The letters IHS on this sunburst medallion are the first three letters of the name "Jesus" in Greek: ΙΗΣ ("Jesus" in Greek: ΙΗΣΟΥΣ or Ιησους).
On the reverse side: Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam. This Latin motto (translation: "For the greater glory of God"), oftened shortened to AMDG, was coined by St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).
