The Lighting of the Advent Candle
The lighting of the Advent candle is a tradition in many churches and homes during the Advent season. Often four purple candles are used to represent each week in Advent. Sometime one larger white candle is placed in the middle of the advent wreath and is used to represent Christ. Some prefer three purple or blue candles with one candle being rose or pink which represents joy.
The Advent wreath began in the time of the Protestant reformer Martin Luther.
The lighting of the Advent candle each week heightens anticipation as children and adults celebrate Advent and prepare for Christmas. The wreath reminds us of whom we are called to be as followers of Jesus. Each Sunday of the Advent season, we focus on one of the four virtues Jesus brings us: Hope, Love, Joy and Peace. Some have an additional white candle or Christ candle which is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day reminding Christians that Jesus is the light of the world. The order and exact wording vary among churches.
