Angels? Archangels? Guardian Angels?
God – being God – does not, of course, need angels, archangels, guardian angels, or, for that matter, angels or creatures of any sort. Yet – in God’s own incomprehensibilty – God has deigned that angels exist in creation. God has located angels in a most special place in the hierarchy of being: they are located right above human beings but right below God. Like God, angels, are above human beings, since, like God, they live as pure spirits unbounded by time and space and time in this universe. Yet angels, like human beings, reason, imagine, and love. Nevertheless, like human beings, angels exist below God, since angels are not divinely omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient. Saint Thomas Aquinas, the great Doctor Angelicus, argues for an hierarchy of a whole range of heavenly beings: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominations, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels. While angels may come last in this heavenly hierarchy, they come first for many, many persons (especially children) who ask that they bring them God’s comfort, help and protection. As guardians and companions on our life journey, angels rejoice with us when we are joyful and strenghten us when we are in sorrow and and suffering.
