Chesterton humorously asserts that “angels can fly, because they can take themselves lightly.” So angels are multitalented: Angels fly, they sing and they stand watch. But angels also herald peace and announce glad tidings.

Angels – Heralds of Glad Tidings in First Place!
God the Creator Mundi–the Creator of the cosmos–certainly does not need archangels, guardian angels, or angels, or any other creature, for that matter. But in God’s inscrutable wisdom and plan, God wills angels into existence. God has assigned them to a special level in the hierarchy of being: below God, but above human beings. Angels, with God, exist above human beings. For they are, with God, pure spirits, unconstrained by space or time in our world. With human beings, however, angels have intellect and will: they think, imagine, and love. However, angels are, with human beings, below God, since neither they nor human beings possess the divine attributes of omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience. Saint Thomas Aquinas, Doctor Angelicus of the Church, insists that there exists a nine-level hierarchy of heavenly beings within the great hierarchy of being: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominations, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels. Angels finish ninth in this heavenly hierarchy, but nevertheless come in first for the many persons who seek their protection and welcome their message of peace and glad tidings.
