Mary – Young Mother and Theotokos
Mary, for all her simplicity and tenderness as a young mother with her child, is also the Theotokos (Θεοτόκος), the God-bearer, the Mother of God. In 431 a.d.., the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus proclaimed the Virgin Mary to be the Theotokos because she gave birth not simply to a human baby but to God, the Incarnate Logos, as a human baby. Mary was surely but a very young woman (probably still but a teenager) when she said “Yes!” to God and God’s plans for her and for all of creation through her. In this simple young woman living in a remote backwater of the vast and powerful Roman Empire, God, through her, indeed “has brought down mighty kings from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly.” (Luke 1:52).
