Mary the Theotokos – Mary the “God-Bearer”
Mary, the mother of Jesus, was solemnly defined in 431 a.d. at the Ecumenical Councial of Ephesus as the “God-bearer” or “Mother of God” (in Greek, Θεοτόκος – Theotokos). She is the Theotokos because she gave birth not simply to a human baby, but to God as a human baby. Mary was only a young woman (probably still but a teenager) when she said “Yes!” to God and the divine plan for her and for all of the human race. In this simple young woman, an inhabitant of a small rural town in a remote backwater of the mighty Roman Empire, God has – through the birth of Jesus – “brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble” (Luke 1:52).
