It was a fairly ordinary day in the Catholic News Service Rome bureau and in our Washington newsroom when, out of the blue, a caption contest broke out.
Caption suggestions welcome for this photo of #PopeFrancis at today’s meeting with cardinals (Paul Haring/CNS) pic.twitter.com/y8Ll7nJW5b

We won’t identify the culprit who launched it, but you may be able to find him on Twitter.
So, of course, quicker than you can recite the Confiteor, the contest was joined. Here are a few of the responses:
@CatholicNewsSvc “How about this one for the Ignatian gang sign?”
— SeattleU News (@SeattleUNews) February 12, 2015
@CatholicNewsSvc You heard me. Your Roma football team choked in the Coppa Italia Quarterfinal against Florence.
— Joseph Riggio (@joejoethebigrig) February 12, 2015
This from one of our paying customers, The Criterion in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis:
@CatholicNewsSvc I hope he not talking again about what happens if you insult his mother…
— The Criterion (@criteriononline) February 12, 2015
@CatholicNewsSvc “on St. Blaise Day, you have to do the candles like this.”
— Murphy Burke (@MJBurke3) February 12, 2015
@CatholicNewsSvc “Here’s what I’m going to do to the Curia.”
— James Martin, SJ (@JamesMartinSJ) February 12, 2015
@CatholicNewsSvc ARE YOU CHOKING? I know first aid. May I help you? (Keep coughing!)
— Barb Fraze (@bfraze) February 12, 2015
(Barb works here. Yes, she really knows her way around a first-aid kit.)
@JamesMartinSJ @CatholicNewsSvc “That new Italian restaurant up the street?”
— Jason Welle, SJ (@malawijay) February 12, 2015
@CatholicNewsSvc Pope Francis’ opinion on Vatican bureaucracy.
— Joanna Nuval (@janeway529) February 12, 2015
“@JamesMartinSJ: @CatholicNewsSvc “Here’s what I’m going to do to the Curia.”” You’ve stolen my thoughts, Father James!
— Marisa #ViaClaver (@M_BrokenLeg) February 12, 2015
@CatholicNewsSvc That’s it! Back to the drawing board with this collar design. I want simple & breathable! !!!!
— Esther Hardman (@EstherHardman1) February 12, 2015
And this was declared the winner by our Rome bureau:
@CatholicNewsSvc “Here’s what to do when spanking doesn’t work.”
— Gretchen Crowe (@GretchenOSV) February 12, 2015
(We know Gretchen, who is editor of the national Catholic newsweekly Our Sunday Visitor, so we know she was kidding!)
@EstherHardman1 @CatholicNewsSvc “I just bless my own throat on the feast of St. Blaise.”
