Jesus and his Mother and Brothers—A New Community of Disciples

Anyone who has watched their own child or a very dear friend die before their eyes knows all too well the intense agony and powerlessness which Jesus’ mother, Mary, and Jesus’ Beloved Disciple, John, experienced as they gazed helplessly on Jesus dying on the cross, his life ebbing away from his tortured and crucified body. Even while in the throes of his agony on the cross, Jesus comforts his mother by making John into her son. Now slipping away into death’s cold embrace, Jesus wants to ensure that his mother is cared for by her new son, and that his disciple John now has a mother to call his own. In the trying days ahead, Mary will need her “son” John to support her in her grief, and John will need his “mother” Mary to strengthen him in his faith.

But even more is going on here. When in Mark 3:31-35 (Matthew 12:46-50) his “mother and brothers” come asking for him, Jesus asks in return “Who are my mother and my brothers?” His answer to this question is a new understanding of “mother” and “brother” as disciple: “Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to me.” So the dying Jesus leaves his natural mother as the mother of the Beloved Disciple, and he in turn is designated as her son, thereby becoming Jesus’ brother. Jesus has in this way created a family of disciples, present at the cross, now the birthplace of the church.
