The Cross of Jesus – A piece of jewelry or home decor?
We are simply much too familiar with the Christian cross. Most of us have grown up with a cross hanging on our bedroom walls, prominently displayed in our churches, and adorning the necks of our friends and family members. Familiarity can breed indifference. We placidly ignore the disturbing fact that the cross was originally an instrument of pure evil, designed specifically only for torture and death, and especially popular and effective as a means of quelling rebellious peoples in occupied lands. The actual cross of Jesus was anything but a “lovely” piece of home decor or jewelry! The cross of Jesus was an ugly, obscene, bloody, violent thing, designed only to lengthen and intensify Jesus’ agony. Yet now this ugly, obscene, cruel instrument of suffering and death has indeed been transformed – “re-purposed” – by Christ’s Resurrection from the dead and definitive defeat of death. We now prominently display “beautiful” crosses in our homes and hang “lovely” crosses around our necks. We can do so because the death’s sway over us has been definitively destroyed by Christ’s Resurrection! Now with Saint Paul we even dare to mock and scorn death: Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? (I Corinthians 15:55)
