The Chalice of Christ
At his Last Supper, Jesus took the cup (Latin: calix – English: “chalice”) filled with wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you“ (Luke 22:20). After his Last Supper, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-39), where he beseeched his Father, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” At every celebration of the Eucharist, we drink from the cup (chalice) of Christ in remembrance of him and what he has done for us. When we drink from the cup (chalice) we recommit to the New Covenant, we accept the chalice of the mystery of suffering in our own lives, we remember Christ’s saving work and become more and more members of the Body of Christ.
