The Assumption of Mary into Heaven Plaque – A Tender Labor of Love, Faith, and Hope

The Assumption of Mary into Heaven plaque is 8.25 inches high, 6.75 inches wide, and 1 inch thick. A community of cloistered religious sisters in a French monastery create, fashion from dolomite stone and resin, and finish by hand this plaque in their atelier. Each member of the community prayerfully completes an assigned necessary for finishing every plaque. How, where, and by whom The Assumption of Mary into Heaven plaque is made gives testament to how profoundly ”culturally authentic” – and what a tender labor of love, faith and hope this plaque is!

The Dogma of the Assumption of Mary Body and Soul into Heaven

The Assumption (or Dormition or “Falling Asleep”) of Mary into Heaven was dogmatically defined in 1950 by Pope Pius XII:  By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. (Munificentissimus Deus). As a scriptural foundation for this doctrine, Pope Pius XII cites First Corinthians 15 where Saint Paul alludes to Genesis 3:15 (in addition to the primary reference of Psalms 8:6): And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; her offspring will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”  The prophecy is then that the seed of the woman will crush Satan with his feet. Since Jesus ascended to Heaven to fulfill this prophecy, it follows that the woman would enjoy a similar end, since she shared his enmity with Satan. The pope also mentioned Psalm 132 which commemorates the return of the Ark of God to Jerusalem and laments its subsequent loss. The second half of the psalm promises compensation for this loss in the New Covenant:  “Arise, O Lord, into thy resting place: thou and the ark, which thou hast sanctified”. Since the Church sees Mary as this New Covenant ark, the Church understands that she was assumed into Heaven in the same manner as was the Risen Jesus – that is, body and soul. Finally, Pope Pius XII understands Mary to be the “woman clothed with the sun” of Revelation 12:1–2: A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth.
