Saint Ruth – Great-grandmother of King David
Ruth is depicted gleaning ears of grain (barley and wheat) in the field of Boaz (Ruth 2:1ff). She is genuflecting before the “stump of Jesse” (Isaiah 11:1,10). This tree depicts the Davidic lineage of the Messiah (Christ). Ruth married Boaz and bore him a son Obed. “Boaz was the father of Obed, Obed was the father of Jesse, and Jesse became the father of David” (Ruth 4:21b-22; cf. Matthew 1:5-16). On this “Jesse Tree,” King David is depicted holding a harp on the right lower branch, and the Crucified Christ is depicted as the full blossoming forth, that is, the fruit, of the Jesse Tree. This plaque is the perfect gift for a birthday, confirmation, and first communion.
