Product Description

This is our stunning Saint Andrew the Apostle Plaque Saint Andrew (Ἀνδρέας, Andreas) – in the Orthodox tradition the “First-Called” (Πρωτόκλητος – Prōtoklētos) – was a disciple of John the Baptist and the first one called to follow Jesus (John 1:35-42). He was the brother of Saint Peter. This plaque is a most suitable gift for the feast day of St. Andrew on November 30th, for a birthday, first communion, or confirmation, and, of course, a great “stocking stuffer” for Christmas!

A Solid Bronze Wall Plaque in Three Sizes

This plaque comes in three sizes: small (p69k – 2 x 1.6 inches), medium (p57m – 3.75 x 3 inches), and large (p8g – 7.9 x 6.3 inches). The notch on the back of this solid bronze plaque makes for easy hanging on any wall at home or in the office. This plaque was conceived and cast in Germany by a world-renowned master goldsmith. This plaque is also that special “Andrew,” “Andreas,” or “Andy” in your life!

St. Andrew and the X-Shaped Cross (Crux decussata)

St. Andrew (in German, St. Andreas) is depicted on this plaque standing in front of the X-shaped cross on which, according to tradition, he was crucified. St. Andrew was, at his own request, crucified on an X-shaped cross because he did not consider himself worthy to be crucified on the same type of Latin cross as Jesus had been. This X-shaped cross is the crux decussata (decussated cross) because of its resemblance to the Roman decussis, or X, the symbol for the Roman numeral 10. However, the depiction of St. Andrew’s martyrdom on a crux decussata apparently did not become widespread until the later Middle Ages.
