Saint Gertrude of Nivelles – the original “Cat Lady”

St. Gertrude (in German, Gertrud) is depicted on this plaque holding a traveler’s staff. The crown on the ground symbolizes her refusal to marry into a royal family.  Mice and rats can be seen scurrying away and dying at her feet.  She and her nuns kept cats to control the rodent population. According to one account, she prayed that the rodents leave her monastery and they did so immediately.  Saint Gertrude is the original “cat lady” – the patron saint of cats and cat lovers.
