This is our stunning Saint Louis IX, King of France Plaque. Saint Louis, King of France (1214-1270), was the son of King Louis VIII and Blanche of Castile. He became at age eleven King of France and reigned for 44 years. He is the only canonized king of France. He is depicted on this plaque holding a sceptre with a fleur-de-Lis on top, the symbol of France. This plaque is a wonderful gift for a birthday, ordination, Christmas, and for the feast day of St. Louis, King of France, on August 25th.

Patron of La Sainte Chapelle and la Sorbonne

Saint Louis IX (in German:  Ludwig) was a fervent patron of architecture. He had built his personal chapel, the architectural gem la Sainte Chapelle.  There he preserved his collection of reputed Passion relics, including Christ’s Crown of Thorns (one of the most important relics in medieval Christendom). He was a patron of Robert of Sorbonne who founded the College de la Sorbonne which became the seat of the theological faculty of the University of Paris. Louis IX instituted many judicial and legislative reforms. He vigorously promoted Christianity in France, established foundations for religious orders, executed synodal decrees of the Church, founded hospitals for lepers, and collected relics. He supported Pope Innocent IV in his war against Emperor Frederick II of Germany. He was a lay member of the Franciscan order. He led the Seventh and Eighth Crusades in the Holy Land and died during the second one. He is the patron saint of Saint Louis University (an Ignatian, Jesuit institution) in Saint Louis, Missouri.
