Product Description

This Saint Mechtilde of Hackeborn Plaque commemorates St. Mechtilde of Helfta and Hackeborn (1240-1298) who was a Benedictine sister, gifted spiritual writer and marvelous singer (“the Nightingale of Helfta”). This solid bronze plaque of Saint Mechtilde (in German, Mechthild –  in English, Matilda) is an appropriate gift to celebrate the feast day of St. Mechtilde on November 19th. This is indeed a wonderful  gift for a birthday, feast day, or confirmation, for that special “Mechtilde” (or Matilda) in your life!

A Bronze Wall Plaque in Three Sizes

Available in three sizes – small (p119k – 2 x 1.8 inches), medium (p118m – 3.75 x 3 inches), and large (p269g – 7.9 x 6.3 inches) – this plaque will hang easily on the wall at home or office. This solid bronze plaque was designed and realized in Germany by a master bronze-smith.  A fitting gift for a birthday, feast day, and confirmation.

Saint Mechtilde and Dante’s Purgatorio

St. Mechtilde is depicted on this plaque writing her book Liber specialis gratiae (The Book of Special Grace) which was immensely popular in Europe during and well after her death.  In the right background sits St. Gertrude the Great, whom St. Mechtilde cared for from the age of 5 and profoundly influenced.  St. Mechtilde may have been, at least partially, the inspiration for Donna Matelda in Cantos xxvii, xxviii and xxxi of Dante’s Purgatorio. This plaque is an ideal gift for St. Mechtilde’s feast day gift (November 19th), for a birthday, and especially for confirmation.
