From Fearful Fisherman to Roman “Rock”
A most unlikely leader for the Church of Christ! Originally a fisherman, he had a leadership role among the followers of Jesus and was in Jesus’ inner circle. He confessed Jesus as the Messiah (Matthew 16:13-20) but then denied him three times (Luke 22:24-34, 47-62; John 18:15-18, 25-27). After his reinstatement (John 21:1-19), he preached on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-41). According to tradition, Peter was crucified upside down in Rome during the reign of Emperor Nero Augustus Caesar. His mortal remains are preserved in the underground Confessio directly under the dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica. He shares his main feast day with Saint Paul of Tarsus on June 29th.
