This is our moving Saint Sebastian Plaque. St. Sebastian (died c. 288) was martyred during the Roman emperor Diocletian’s persecution of Christians. He, like Saint George, was one of a class of military martyrs and solider saints in the early Christian Church whose cults began in the 4th century and culminated in the 14th and 15th centuries. Sebastian is the patron saint of archers, soldiers, athletes, and of a holy death. This solid bronze plaque is a wonderful gift for many occasions: baptism, confirmation, birthday, first communion, the feast day of St. Sebastian on January 20th, and for Christmas (a great stocking stuffer!).

Saint Sebastian – The Saint Martyred Twice
Saint Sebastian was appointed a captain of the Praetorian Guard under the Emperor Diocletian, who was unaware of his Christian faith. Diocletian condemned Sebastian for this “betrayal” and commanded him to be led into a field and bound to a stake there so that archers could use him for target practice: “And the archers shot at him till he was as full of arrows as an urchin” and left him there for dead. Miraculously, the arrows only wounded him. Irene of Rome, the widow of Castulus, went to retrieve his body to bury it, but discovered him still alive. She brought him back to her home and nursed him back to health. After he had recovered, Saint Sebastian later went out and harangued Diocletian as he passed by. The emperor had Sebastian beaten to death on the spot and had his body thrown into a toilet. But in an apparition, Sebastian told a Christian widow where his body was to be found undefiled so that it could be buried “at the catacombs by the apostles.” For this reason, Sebastian is also known as the saint who was martyred twice.
