Saint Lucy – the Martyr of Light in the Darkness

The feast day of Saint Lucy comes during Advent on December 13th. Her feast day has become a festival of light, since her feast was originally on the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year. The long dark winters of Scandinavian countries fostered celebration of her feast day. There, on December 13th each year a young girl in a white dress with red sash (the symbol of martyrdom) carries palm fronds and wears on her head a wreath or crown of lit candles. This plaque will then be a most fitting gift for St. Lucy’s feast day (December 13th), for a birthday, first communion, and especially for confirmation.
