Advent Calendars, A Beautiful Tradition
As is so for many of our Christmas traditions, we trace the origin of Advent calendars to Germany in the 19th century. Children drew chalk lines or hung pictures to mark the days in anticipation of Christmas. The printing of Advent calendars on cardboard soon followed, with the calendars including 24 windows to open in the days before Christmas. Opening one window each day for 24 days through Christmas Eve, children and adults alike delight in revealing the secrets behind the windows.
