This exquisite wall hanging is the Celtic Madonna. Carved in linden wood and painted by a Colorado artist, this piece is truly unique. In this depiction, Mary – “the lily of the valley” – is holding a lily. The Celtic Madonna is a true work of art which will grace the wall of home, chapel, church, retreat house or school.
The Artist’s Goal in His Own Words
My goal as an artist is to use my medium “wood” to create the visions that spring from my life and interests. The process is often as important as the result. Each project has its own new experience for me to learn from. The uses of symbols of different cultures combined with the traditional training in carving are my tools and creative language. Certain forms have a very magical quality. In my recent work, these are the Green Man figure, Celtic designs, the Healing Bear, and the Earth turtle. They touch an area in the spirit and like seeds grow there. Exploring such strong images brings me into a deeper enjoyment of the creative work process.
A Celtic Madonna
This depiction of the Madonna is indeed Celtic through and through. The brooch holding her garment in place is the Dara Knot. This Celtic symbol boasts an interwoven design and a name that comes from the Irish word Doire which means “oak tree”. The Dara knot then symbolizes the root system of an ancient oak. Like other Celtic knot symbols, the Dara Knot is made up of intertwined lines with no beginning or end. There is no single design for the Dara Celtic Knot but all versions are centered on the common theme of the oak tree and its roots. Celts and Druids revered nature, particularly ancient oak trees, and considered them sacred. They saw the oak tree as a symbol of strength, power, wisdom, and endurance. The Madonna’s Halo and Robe are framed by other versions of the Celtic knot. Celtic knots were used for decorations, as spiritual charms, and as teaching aids.
