“Apostles to the Apostles” or “Woman with the Alabaster Jar”?
Saint Mary Magdalene is often depicted holding a vessel of spices which she has brought to Jesus’ tomb on Easter morning to anoint his body. Mary Magdalene becomes the “Apostle to the Apostles” (and the first patron saint of evangelizers everywhere!) when the Risen Christ appears to her and she then returns to the apostles to proclaim to them that “Jesus is risen!” (Mark 16:1-8, Luke 24:1-11, John 20:1-2, 11-18).
But Mary Magdalene was later mistaken in history for the “woman with the alabaster jar,” an anonymous prostitute who anoints Jesus’ feet and dries them with her hair (Luke 7:36-50). This is a case of mistaken identity, a false narrative, and an unfounded tradition of conflating the “Apostle to the Apostles” with an unnamed “woman of ill repute.” (For more, go to History/Story tab.) The feast day of St. Mary Magdelene’s feast is July 22nd.
