The Crucified Messiah is the Conqueror of Death
A “Crucified Messiah” certainly seems like a contradiction in terms. The two disciples on their way to Emmaus explain to the Risen Jesus (whom they did not recognize) that “Jesus of Nazareth was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel” (Luke 24:19-24). “We had hoped…” Clearly, their expectation was of a powerful, military Messiah who would liberate Israel from its foreign oppressors and usher in the Messianic Age of justice and peace. Yet the Risen Jesus—by the very fact that he has conquered death—is living proof that being crucified and being the Messiah are not, and never were, an oxymoron. Jesus is indeed the Christ, the Anointed One, the Messiah—crucified unto death, but risen as the Victor Mortis, the conqueror of death, and the One who will liberate all of creation.
