The Six Days of Creation in a Single Bronze Plaque
Genesis 1:1,31 – In German above: Im Anfang schuf Gott Himmel und Erde. (In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.) In German below: Und er sah, dass es gut war. (And God saw, that it was good.)
Creation (Genesis 1:1-31) is depicted here in concentric, ever-widening circles:
At the center is the Creator Mundi (Creator of the ordered universe) depicted holding the orb of the earth as a symbol of God’s power to create the universe from nothing.
In the first circle, the heavenly firmament with the moon, the planets and the stars.
The second circle depicts the waters of the seas and oceans with all sea creatures.
The third circle is the dry land with all the beasts and birds of the earth on display.
This circle is closed by the Garden of Eden, in which Adam, Eve, the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and the crafty serpent) are all present (Genesis 2-3). And so begins the history of our salvation.
Laudato si’ – A Challenge to Care For God’s Creation
Laudato si‘ (English: Praise Be to You) is the second encyclical of Pope Francis. The encyclical is subtitled: “on care for our common home.” Pope Francis critiques consumerism and irresponsible development, laments environmental degradation and global warning, and calls upon all people of the world to take “swift and unified global action.” The encyclical, dated May 24, 2015, was officially published on June 18, 2015. The full English text can be found here. The encyclical begins:
1. “LAUDATO SI’, mi’ Signore” – “Praise be to you, my Lord”. In the words of this beautiful canticle, Saint Francis of Assisi reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us. “Praise be to you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, and who produces various fruit with colored flowers and herbs”.
2. This sister now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her. We have come to see ourselves as her lords and masters, entitled to plunder her at will. The violence present in our hearts, wounded by sin, is also reflected in the symptoms of sickness evident in the soil, in the water, in the air and in all forms of life. This is why the earth herself, burdened and laid waste, is among the most abandoned and maltreated of our poor; she “groans in travail” (Rom 8:22). We have forgotten that we ourselves are dust of the earth (cf. Gen 2:7); our very bodies are made up of her elements, we breathe her air and we receive life and refreshment from her waters.
