The Cross of Creation is the “Cross of Four”: four points of the cross and four quadrants or quarters within the cross. This “fourness” reflects the ancient understanding of creation as being composed of fours: four elements, “four corners of the earth,” four winds, four directions, and four seasons. Measuring 3.75 x 3.5 inches, the Cross of Creation is the perfect gift for almost every occasion. Not simply a decorative cross, this piece is a beautiful and symbolic symbol of faith.
A Striking Work of Heirloom Quality
The Cross of Creation, forged from solid bronze in Germany, enjoys a striking fourfold design. This cross of true heirloom quality is indeed the perfect housewarming present that will retain its beauty for generations to come. Though the design is modern, the craftsmanship, care, and symbolic depth that animates this piece comes from the Old World.
Four is the Number of Creation
The number 4 derives its meaning from creation. On the fourth day of the “week of creation” God completed the material universe. On this fourth day God brought into existence our sun, the moon, and all the stars (Genesis 1:14 – 19). Their purpose was not only to give off light, but also to divide the day from the night on earth, thus becoming a basic demarcation of time. They were also made to be a type of signal that would mark off the days, years and seasons.
In creation there are now four seasons, four cardinal points (North – South – East – West), and “four corners of the earth.” There are four winds in Greek mythology: Boreas (Aquilo in Latin) the north wind and bringer of cold winter air; Zephyrus (Favonius in Latin), the west wind and bringer of light spring and early summer breezes; and Notos (Auster in Latin) was the south wind and bringer of the storms of late summer and autumn; and Eurus, the southeast or east wind. The moon has four phases. There were for many centuries only four elements: earth – air – fire – water.
