The Fleur-de-Lis, Mary, and the Holy Trinity
The fleur-de-lis has a long and complicated heraldic and political history in France and Europe. Until 1300, the fleur-de-Lis was originally associated with Jesus, but later increasingly with Mary—the “lily among thorns” (Song of Songs 2:2). Since the lily was viewed as a symbol of chastity and purity, the fleur-de-lis was an obvious attribute to give to the Virgin Mary in iconography. The three petals of the fleur-de-lis became understood as a symbol for the three Persons of the Holy Trinity. The band (not depicted on this pendant) binding the three petals together symbolize Mary—for without her, the mother of Jesus Christ (the second Person of the Trinity), the Trinity is not intelligible.
