David – warrior, king, composer, ancestor of Jesus
This plaque depicts King David (Hebrew for “beloved”), playing the harp and being heralded by two trumpeters. King David is shown playing the harp since he is credited with composing many of the Psalms in the Book of Psalms. The sword he carries is a reminder that as a young man, he slew Goliath with a slingshot and then cut off his head with Goliath’s own sword (I Samuel 17:1-58). The “Tree of Jesse” is in the left background as a symbol of the Davidic lineage stretching from Jesse of Bethlehem (David’s father) all the way through Joseph of Nazareth to King David’s distant descendant, Jesus the Messiah, the “Son of David.” This solid bronze plaque – conceived and executed by a master goldsmith in Germany – is an excellent gift for anyone named David on their patron saint’s feast day (December 29th), on Christmas morning (a great “Christmas stocking stuffer”!), or on their birthday. A fitting confirmation gift as well.
King David lived in the 10th century BCE. He was the King of Judah and Israel and founder of the Judean dynasty with Jerusalem as its uniting capital. King David was regarded as a national hero when he was still a young man, a soldier, a reformer, a father, a writer, a sinner, and a penitent. The best way to appreciate King David is about him in the Bible (1 and 2 Kings; 1 and 2 Samuel; 1 and 2 Chronicles) in order to see what he was like, to appreciate his humanity, and to take delight in his poetry.
