The Glass Christmas Nativity Plaque depicts the Holy Family on Christmas morning almost like a “family portrait”. Measuring 8 inches high, 8 inches wide, and ¾ inches thick, and weighing 5 lbs., the Glass Christmas Nativity Plaque is a reverse oil on glass painting that can be framed to hang on the wall, or displayed on a sturdy tabletop display easel. The “Gloria in Excelsis” banner at the top means “Glory [to God] in the highest” (Luke 2:14). This is an exquisite gift which celebrates the Holy Family on Christmas night. This will be an heirloom gift that will indeed be passed down for many generations to come!
A Reverse Oil Painting on Glass
Reverse oil painting on glass is a technique by which an artist paints a picture on the reverse side of a glass surface. Realistic reverse paintings are extremely challenging to accomplish successfully since the artist, in painting a face for example, must first paint the pupil of an eye on the glass before painting the iris. This is precisely the opposite of the way a painting is normally done. The artist will unable to correct any earlier mistakes since the surface between the glass and the painted area is no longer accessible. A German artist (now deceased) painted the Glass Christmas Nativity Plaque.
The Holy Family Inspires Every Family to be Holy
The serenity radiating in this depiction of the Holy Family on Christmas is fleeting. The Holy Family will soon be on the run as refugees fleeing their homeland to save their baby boy, Jesus, the newborn Messiah. Eventually they will return to the humdrum monotony of everyday life in Nazareth. While our own families will (hopefully) never need to flee our homes in fear of our lives, this does not mean that our own families lack for stress, tension, and drama! We too are called in the midst of our personal and familial struggles, stresses, and challenges to become holy, to become members of God’s holy family.
