Our Ignatian Pendant with AMDG represents the core spiritual, theological and educational values of the Jesuit tradition. Familiar to Jesuits and students at Jesuit institutions, the letters IHS on this sunburst Ignatian pendant are the first three letters of Jesus in Greek: ΙΗΣ (Jesus in Greek: ΙΗΣΟΥΣ or Ιησους).
The text on the back reads: AMDG (short for Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam – translation: “For the greater glory of God”), a phrase used by St. Ignatius himself.

The Seal of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits)
The monogram of the letters IHS on this sunburst Ignatian medallion are the first three letters of the name “Jesus” in Greek: ΙΗΣ (“Jesus” in Greek is ΙΗΣΟΥΣ or Ιησους). The Greek letter Eta (H) pronounced as E is central to understanding correctly the letters of this monogram. The abbreviation of the name of Jesus as IHS would often be indicated by a small horizontal mark above the abbreviated name. This small mark was later transformed into a cross when the monogram was written in Gothic minuscule script as ihs. For when the abbreviation mark above the letters was drawn through the vertical top of the small h, a cross was formed. When the monogram was then later written in Latin capital letters, the writers were unwilling to give up the cross shape and as a result the characteristic cross shape drawn over the cross beam of the H was formed. Christ was often depicted as the sun (as on this medallion), Mary as the moon and the saints as the stars. Later versions of the seal of the Society of Jesus always include the three nails of Jesus’ crucifixion. St. Ignatius, the founder of the Society of Jesus, used this monogram in the official seal of the Society of Jesus.
