A Crucified King?
How can the King of Kings, the Messiah, be crucified and killed? This was the question which tormented the two disciples on their way to Emmaus. They shared their profound disappointment and confusion with an anonymous travel companion: “Jesus of Nazareth was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel” (Luke 24:19-24).
”We had hoped…” Clearly, the two disciples had expected Jesus to be a real king, a real Messiah, the kind who would destroy his enemies (the Romans, of course), free Israel, and initiate a messianic age of justice and peace for the Jewish people. The Risen Jesus responds to them with a simple gesture – he reveals himself to them in the breaking of the bread. They immediately recognize him and realize that Jesus is much more than a failed, crucified prophet and much more than a mere military “messiah”! Jesus is indeed the Conqueror of death, the Lord of life and death, the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, the Crucified and Risen Messiah, the Alpha and Omega who makes all things new!
