How can the Messiah be a “Suffering Servant”?
A “Crucified Messiah” is simply an oxymoron, a blatant contradiction in terms. This was the firm belief of the two disciples journeying to Emmaus. They explained to the mysterious travel companion who joined them: “Jesus of Nazareth was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel” (Luke 24:19-24). ”We had hoped…” They had hoped for a Messiah of power, violence and force who would crush the Roman occupiers, liberate Israel, and reign over a Messianic Age of justice, prosperity, and peace. The Risen Jesus revealed himself to the two disciples as much, much more than that. In his resurrection, Jesus had conquered death itself and was now the Lord of Life! Jesus the Christ (Greek for “messiah”) is the “Suffering Servant”—brought low and crucified to death—who now makes all things new.
