Product Description
The Mother of God Pendant presents us with the paradox of power. What seems small and weak in this world can be the locus of world- (and cosmos-) transforming power! A young woman (probably still but a teenager) said “Yes!” to God’s plan for her life and for the life of the world through her. In Mary – a simple young woman living in a small town in a remote corner of the Roman Empire – God indeed “has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble” (Luke 1:52). For she has become the Theotokos, the very Mother of God! The Mother of God Pendant is a great gift for a first communion, confirmation, and, of course, Mother’s Day!
The Mother of God Pendant – A Committed Labor of Love, Faith, and Hope
The Mother of God Pendant measures 1.2 inches in diameter. Diminutive in size, this highly polished dolomite stone and resin pendant has the feel, gleam, and heft of a priceless heirloom carved from ivory! A religious community of sisters in France design, mold, and handcraft each and every pendant in their monastery’s atelier. Each nun is a pure contemplative in action who prayerfully begins and completes a specific, assigned task which is important to the completion of each Mother of God Pendant. Where, how, and by whom each pendant is finished conveys to us the fact these these pieces are indeed “culturally authentic” and a most committed labor of love, faith and hope!
The Theotokos – the “God-Bearer”
The Virgin Mary was proclaimed the Theotokos (Θεοτόκος – Greek for “God-Bearer”) at the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus in 431 A.D. The Virgin Mary is the Theotokos because she gave birth not to a human being but to God as a human being. The four Greek letters on this pendant – ΜΡ ΘΥ – represent a syncope (contraction) of two Greek words: ΜΗΤΗΡ ΘΕΟΥ – METER THEOU (“Mother of God”). The center part of each word is removed (syncopated). Μ[ΗΤΗ]Ρ Θ[ΕΟ]Υ becomes ΜΡ ΘΥ. The syncopation of each word is represented by the symbol ~ over each Greek letter pair.
