Guardian Angel—At the End and the Beginning!
Angels fly (“Angels can fly because they can take themselves lightly,” said G.K. Chesterton). Angels make music—they sing, jubilate, rejoice, exult, praise and glorify. And angels guard—they watch over and protect those in their care.
In Matthew 18:10, Jesus mentions guardian angels almost in passing: “Do not be cruel to any of these little ones! I promise you that their angels are always with my Father in heaven.” God created angels and assigned them a most unique place in the hierarchy of being between God and humans. Like God, angels live outside our universe of time and space, for they are pure spirits. Like humans, angels are able to think, to love and to imagine. Yet they do not share in God’s omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence. Saint Thomas Aquinas was hailed as the “Angelic Doctor” after he determined there was a nine-level hierarchy of angelic beings: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominations, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels (including Guardian Angels). Guardian Angels are at the end of this hierarchy, but they are doubtless up front and center in the prayers of a child who asks for their protection before the dangers of the day and the terrors of the night: Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here. Ever this day/night be at my side to light, to guard, to rule and guide. Amen.
