The Devotion to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus
Between 1673 and 1675, Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque received a series of mystical apparitions of Jesus who taught her the practice of devotion to His Sacred Heart. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is usually depicted as a flaming heart, surmounted by a cross, and pierced and bleeding from the crown of thorns and the lance’s wound. Christ is also often depicted pointing with his pierced hands to his own chest where his Sacred Heart is burning brightly. Since 1856, this devotion has been officially approved and celebrated on a Friday nineteen days after Pentecost Sunday.
