Our St. Albert the Great Plaque or Albertus Magnus (c. 1193-1280), the Doctor universalis, was a Dominican who taught at the University of Cologne and is buried at St. Andrew’s Dominican Church in Cologne. Known during his lifetime as the doctor universalis and doctor expertus, he is considered to be one of the greatest philosophers and theologians of the Middle Ages. He is the patron saint of philosophers, natural scientists, and students. This plaque is a wonderful gift for first communion, confirmation, birthdays, and the feast day of St. Albertus Magnus on November 15th.

Dante’s Great Lover of Wisdom
On this plaque, St. Albertus Magnus is depicted as Doctor of the Church, academic philosopher and theologian, teacher of St. Thomas Aquinas, and first Christian commentator on all of the writings of Aristotle. In the background stand the crozier and mitre, symbols of his brief 3-year stint as the bishop of Regensburg. His doctrine of free will was the basis of Dante’s ethical system. In Canto X of the Divine Comedy, Dante writes of Albertus and Thomas Aquinas as the great lovers of wisdom (Spiriti Sapienti) in the “Heaven of the Sun.”
