The Saint Bernard of Clairvaux Statue – A Labor of Love, Hope and Faith
This statuette of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux stands 9.4 inches tall and is made from dolomite stone mixed with resin. A cloistered community of nuns create, form, and hand-finish each and every statuette in the atelier of their monastery atelier in France. Each nun is a true “contemplative in action” who prayerfully accomplishes an assigned task required for the completion of every statuette. Where, how, and by whom each Saint Bernard of Clairvaux Statue is made shows that it is truly ”culturally authentic” as well as a labor of love, faith and hope!
O Sacred Heard, Surrounded – Dante’s Last Guide
Saint Bernard is depicted here holding the staff of his office as abbot of the Abbey of Clairvaux. In his right hand he holds the book of his hymn-composition Salve, caput cruentatum, widely known and popularized as the hymn “O sacred head, surrounded”. Saint Bernard’s theology continues to be influential in the Cistercian and Trappist orders. By the time of his death, Bernard had been involved in founding hundreds of monasteries throughout Europe. Saint Bernard was the first Cistercian monk to be included in the calendar of saints. He is remembered now as the Doctor Mellifluus (the “Mellifluous Doctor”) because of his eloquence. His reputation for eloquence (along with his contemplative mysticism and theology of Mary as mediatrix) lead Dante to give Saint Bernard a place of prominence in the Paradiso as Dante’s last guide who leads him through the Empyrean (Paradiso, cantos xxxi-xxxiii).
