Saint of the Council of Trent, Saint of the Counter Reformation
Saint Charles Borromeo (in German, Karl Borromäus) was an austere and dedicated reformer, but also humorless and uncompromising. His unyielding commitment to implement the reforms mandated by the Council of Trent lead him into conflict with secular and religious leaders, and even with the pope himself. St. Charles Borromeo, St. Peter Canisius, S.J., St. Turibius of Mongrovejo and St. Robert Bellarmine, S.J. are cited at the beginning of the 1566 Catechism of the Council of Trent (the Roman Catechism) as responsible for the Council of Trent. This catechism enjoyed an authority surpassed only by the 1992 Catechism of the Catholic Church.
