Saint Florian – Patron Saint of Firefighters
Saint Florian was an officer in the Roman army in the 3rd century. He was born and stationed in what is now Austria. While the military administrator of the province of Noricum, he secretly converted to Christianity. Saint Florian was responsible for the organization of firefighting brigades. According to legend, and as depicted on this plaque, he prevented a town from burning down by throwing but a single bucket of water on the blaze. When he was ordered to execute a group of Christians during the persecutions of Diocletian, he refused, professed his own faith, and died a martyr. This plaque is a great gift for celebrating his feast day on May 4th, for a birthday, for a first communion, for confirmation, and especially for your local firefighters.
