The Saint Francis contemporary icon is a hand-painted work of art made by a whimsical and creative artist in Poland. It honors one of the pillars of the medieval church who is also the namesake for our new Pope, Pope Francis. Each painting is unique and comes hand-signed, making this a truly special gift. We are very honored to provide such joyful and reverent paintings made in such a creative medium. At 5 by 3.5 inches and featuring a leather frame, this beautiful painting is enclosed in a frame with leather backing handmade by the artist’s elderly mother. This painting can be placed anywhere in a home and makes an especially rich addition to a living room or study. The brilliance that this painting exudes comes from the artist’s choice of medium: she uses a process called “reverse oil on glass”. This beautiful Catholic Saint painting is an ideal gift for nature lovers, anyone with a devotion to St. Francis, and anyone who wants to honor the namesake of Pope Francis.
A Reverse Oil Painting on Glass
Reverse oil painting on glass – an art technique through which the artist paints a painting on the reverse side of a glass surface. Reverse paintings are extremely challenging to do well since – in painting a face, for example – the artist must first paint the pupil of an eye on the glass before painting the iris. This is exactly the opposite of how one normally paints a painting. The artist will not be able to go back and change or correct anything done earlier since the surface between the glass and the paint already applied is no longer accessible at all. An artist in Poland who specializes in religious art painted this and many other reverse oil paintings on glass. The elderly mother of the artist enclosed each of these beautiful paintings in a handmade frame with a leather back. Every icon is unique in detail, color and depiction. A Catholic Saint Painting Honoring One of the Church’s Greats
This painting shows St. Francis of Assisi in nature, joyfully communing with the animals. In addition to his famous connection with animals, St. Francis was also a great reformer of the Church. He saw a vision from God that besought him to “rebuild my church.” In order to do this, he embraced radical poverty as a way of revitalizing the Church, eventually founding the Franciscan Order to do this. St. Francis is honored by all for his radical dedication to emulating the life of Christ, for his veneration of poverty as a way to become closer both to nature and to one’s fellow humans, and for his work in helping to reform the church. It is no small wonder, then, that Pope Francis chose him as his namesake. Each of these beautiful paintings is made fresh by hand, so your painting may very slightly in from the one pictured here – these variations will not be substantial however.
