Product Description
Our Saint John the Baptist Plaque (Hebrew: יוחנן המטביל, Yoḥanan ha-mmaṭbil), depicts the last of the Old Testament prophets and the precursor of Jesus. He proclaimed a “baptism” (immersion in water) of repentance in preparation for the coming of the Messiah. On this plaque, John is grasping the staff of a herald and pointing to Jesus, the “Lamb of God” (John 1:29,36). This plaque will be a most meaningful gift for a birthday, first communion, confirmation, Christmas (“stocking stuffer”!), and the feast day of St. John the Baptist on June 24th.

Saint John the Baptist – A “Voice Crying Out in the Wilderness”
John the Baptist was the son of Zechariah, a priest at the temple in Jerusalem, and Elizabeth, a cousin of Mary of Nazareth who visited her when she was pregnant (Luke 1:39-56). He lived as a “wild man” and hermit in the Judean desert until about 27 A.D. He began to preach as “the voice of one calling in the wilderness” on the banks of the Jordan river against the evils of his time and called everyone to undergo a baptism of repentance “for the Kingdom of Heaven is close at hand” (Luke 3:1-18). He attracted great throngs of followers and onlookers. When Jesus came to him, John immediately recognized Him as the Messiah and baptized Him when told to do so (Matthew 3:13-16). After Jesus went on to preach in Galilee, John continued preaching his baptism of repentance in the Jordan valley. Fearful of John’s great sway over the people, Herod Antipas, Tetrarch of Perea and Galilee, had him arrested and imprisoned. John rebuked him for his adulterous and incestuous “marriage” to Herodias, the wife of Philip, his half-brother. Infuriated, Herodias instigated her daughter Salome to demand from Herod the head of John the Baptist (Matthew 14:1-12). The feast day of his beheading is August 29th.
