The Curé of Ars–A Pastor “Acutely Aware of His Responsibilities”
In 1809 he deserted from Napolean’s army and stayed in hiding for 14 months. After the general amnesty in 1810, he resumed his seminary studies. Because he was deemed too slow, he was sent away from the seminary in Lyons. But eventually his piety won out over his ignorance and he was ordained a priest in 1815. In 1818, he was appointed parish priest in the small town of Ars. He quickly realized that the aftermath of the French Revolution’s devastation of the Catholic Church was widespread religious ignorance and indifference. He spent much of his time in the confessional and preached against blasphemy and dancing. If his parishioners refused to give up dancing, he withheld from them absolution. He became known internationally, and people flocked to him from distant places to seek his counsel. By 1855, over 20,000 pilgrims a year were coming to him. During his last ten years of life, he spent 11 to 12 hours each day in the confessional during winter, and 16 hours in the summer. He was made the patron saint of parish priests in 1929. On the 200th anniversary of his birth in 1986, during his visit to Ars, Pope John Paul II during declared Saint John Vianney to be a “rare example of a pastor acutely aware of his responsibilities…and a sign of courage for those who today experience the grace of being called to the priesthood.”
