Opus Dei – The Universal Call to Holiness
Saint Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer and Opus Dei have aroused controversy, mostly concerning allegations of unwarranted secrecy, elitism, cult-like practices within Opus Dei, and political alignment with right-wing political powers, such as the dictatorship of General Franco in Spain (1939–1975). After his death, Saint Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer’s canonization attracted considerable attention both within the Roman Catholic Church and in the worldwide media. But Popes John Paul I, John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis, as well as many other Catholic leaders worldwide, have strongly endorsed Escrivá’s teaching on the universal call to holiness (a major theme of Vatican II, go to History/Story tab), the role of lay persons, and the sanctification of work. In fact, Escrivá may be disliked by some Catholics, but he is venerated by millions more.
