Product Description
Saint Margaret of Antioch Plaque commemorates the Virgin-Martyr (died c. 304), known as Saint Margaret of Antioch in the West, and as Saint Marina the Great Martyr (Greek: Ἁγία Μαρίνα) in the East. Her historical existence has called into question. Pope Gelasius I declared her apocryphal in 494, but during the Crusades devotion to her was revived in the West. This solid bronze plaque is a great gift for a baptism, confirmation, birthday, first communion, the feast day of St. Margaret of Antioch on July 20th, and for Christmas (a great stocking stuffer!).
A Bronze Wall Plaque in Three Sizes
Available in three sizes – Small (p101k – 2.25 x 1.9 inches), Medium (p78m – 4 x 3.25 inches), and Large (p115g – 7.6 x 6.3 inches) – this bronze wall plaque hangs easily on the wall at home or in the office. A master bronze-smith designed and cast this solid bronze plaque. This is a truly distinctive gift for that special Margaret or “Maggie” in your life!
Saint Margaret of Antioch and the Dragon
According to legend, she refused the advances of a Roman prefect who then denounced her as a Christian. When she refused to make sacrifices to the pagan gods, the authorities tried without success first to burn her and then to boil her in a large cauldron. They finally succeeded in beheading her. She is depicted her holding the palm frond of martyrdom. Her story includes a confrontation with the devil in the form of a dragon who swallowed her alive. She emerged from the dragon victorious after the cross she was carrying irritated the dragon’s insides (depicted on this plaque). Because of this story, she is associated with pregnancy, labour, and childbirth.
