Saint of Joy, Saint of Humor
Saint Philip Neri, one of the patron saints of Rome, was during his lifetime a true sign of contradiction. Immersed in the post-Renaissance malaise of his time ad living in a corrupt Rome filled with apathetic clergy, he pursued a life of piety combined with playful humor and a shrewd wit. St. Philip considered a cheerful temperament more a mark of Christians than a melancholy one. For him, “A joyful heart is more easily made perfect than a downcast one.”
