The Cross of Jesus – Not a Piece of Jewelry or Home Decor!
We have become much, much too familiar with the cross! We have all grown up seeing it on the walls of our homes, school classrooms, and hospital rooms; hanging prominently in the sanctuaries of our churches; and adorning the necks of many family members, friends, and acquaintances. And yet we avert our eyes from the uncomfortable fact that the cross was originally an obscene instrument of humiliation, torture, agony, and death. The cross was especially popular as a quite effective means to intimidate rebellious peoples in occupied lands. The actual cross of Jesus was indeed no lovely piece of jewelry or home decor! Jesus’ cross was but an ugly, bloody, obscene, violent, evil thing designed but for one purpose: to extend and intensify the agony of those condemned to die slowly on it from tetanization and asphyxiation.
Yet the meaning of this ugly, obscenely cruel instrument of torture, agony, and death now has been radically reinterpreted – “re-purposed” – by Christ’s Resurrection. Many of us now hang “beautiful” crosses in our homes and wear “lovely” crosses around our necks. Why? Because the power and sway of death over us have been definitively, irreversibly, and forever annihilated by the Resurrection of Christ from the dead! With Saint Paul we now can even dare to scorn and mock death itself: Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? (I Corinthians 15:55)
