The Tree of Jesse as a metaphorical depiction of these scripture verses which depicts the lineage of the Messiah (the “Anointed”, in Greek, the Christ) who is for Christians, Jesus of Nazareth. The Tree of Jesse is often depicted in art (especially during the Medieval ages) and dates from the 11th century.

Depictions of the Jesse Tree vary. Here, the tree is depicted as a summary of the history of salvation from creation to consummation. We see the figure of Jesse (the father of King David) at the foot of the tree. From near his side springs forth the trunk of the tree which branches upward. There are four images within the branches:

Far right: Adam being tempted by the Serpent in the Garden of Eden.
Far left: A Prophet with staff (symbolizing the whole Hebrew prophetic tradition)
Top right: Lion and Calf (a reference to Isaiah 11:6)
Top left: the Child Messiah holding orb and sceptre (“and a little child will lead them”)
