Our Lady of Advent – Icon of God’s “Womb-Love”
The Anticipation statue awaits in prayerful anticipation the birth of the child growing insider her womb. She loves her unborn child with the fierce and intense love which only mothers (expectant and actual) experience: “Womb-love.” Mary’s love for her unborn baby is the love that every mother has for her own child, and the same fierce, maternal love which God has for God’s people. The Hebrew word rachamim (רחמים – the plural of רָ֫חֶם – rechem, meaning “womb”) – translated as “bowels, tender mercies, love, and pity” – is the intense, literally visceral “womb-love” which a mother has for the child she is nurturing (or has nurtured) in her womb. When used in reference to God, rachamim speaks of God’s “womb-love” par excellence for God’s people: “Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, yet I will not forget you” (Isaiah 49:15).
