Jesus – Conqueror of Death, Firstborn of the New Creation
The Resurrected Christ Statue depicts Jesus risen from the dead. His was not a resuscitation of a corpse (as was the case with Lazarus in John 11:1-45). No, the resurrection of Christ is a radical new beginning, the Beginning of the End – all of creation is now beginning to be transformed into “a new heaven and a new earth” (Revelation 21:1-5a). In this depiction, the Risen Christ grasps the “Resurrection cross” or “Triumphal cross” (Crux longa) as his military standard of power (vexillum) which heralds him as the victor over death. The banner on this cross is usually white with a red cross which symbolizes the victory of the resurrected Christ over death. This symbol is derived from Emperor Constantine the Great’s vision and his use of a cross on his Roman military standard (labarum). The Resurrected Christ Statue is beautiful and exquisite, to be sure, but also a reminder that death cannot be the final word on any life, not on ours, and not on the lives of our departed loved ones.
