Mary – Mother of God – Queen of Heaven?
How can Mary be queen of anything, much less “Queen of Heaven”? Mary has become “royalty” by virtue of being the mother of the Messiah. Moreover, since Jesus is the Second Person of the Trinity incarnate, the Word made flesh (John 1:14), Mary is – as the Council of Ephesus officially declared her in 431 a.d. – the “God-bearer”, the Theotokos, the very Mother of God. Catholics began to address the Mother of God with other purely honorific titles such as “Queen of the Angels” and “Queen of Heaven.” Saint John Damascene claims that Mary is not only Queen of Heaven, but also Queen of Creation: When she became Mother of the Creator, she truly became Queen of every creature.
